Los Angeles County introduced a revised registration process Tuesday for residents who wish to address the Board of Supervisors during its meetings. The pilot is intended to reduce barriers that previously required callers to monitor lengthy sessions in full.
Under the updated approach, individuals who register can receive a text notification once the relevant agenda item reaches the board. This feature removes the need for continuous viewing of meetings that often extend for several hours.
Registration opens at 9 a.m. on the day of each meeting through an online portal. Participants select the session and specific items they intend to address. Phone callers then dial a dedicated line and follow automated prompts without entering access codes or personal identification numbers.
Supervisor Janice Hahn stated that the changes seek to empower residents across the county, particularly those unable to attend in person on Tuesdays. She noted the board's duty to ensure public input remains straightforward and inclusive.
In-person speakers may register at a kiosk inside the boardroom and check in upon arrival. County officials indicated that registration is optional yet accelerates the process, while anonymous comments continue to be accepted.
Supervisor Hilda Solis observed that many residents had voiced frustrations with the earlier system. She expressed hope that the new setup, described as a significant investment, would address those issues and improve overall efficiency.
The system incorporates accessibility tools such as screen-reader compatibility. Written submissions remain available through the board's website, and the pilot follows prior efforts to add translation services and a different teleconference platform.
