Federal prosecutors have charged two men with wire fraud and conspiracy in a scheme that authorities say involved impersonating a San Francisco 49ers player to solicit funds from women met through dating applications.
Daejon Love, 35, and Taylor Jamie Chan, 18, were arrested August 24 in Boise, Idaho, according to reporting by ABC7 Los Angeles. Court documents indicate the pair began the operation in February 2022 and continued it for more than four years across California, Idaho, Washington and Oregon.
Investigators allege Love created multiple online personas, including claims of being a professional football player or a wealthy real estate investor, while Chan posed as his financial adviser. The pair reportedly used fabricated investment opportunities and altered account displays to persuade victims to transfer money or take out loans.
Prosecutors state that Love would end contact once victims had no further funds or raised concerns about the transactions. None of the identified victims received repayments or returns on the amounts provided, and records show approximately $1.3 million obtained from 26 individuals, with officials indicating additional victims may exist.
Arrest warrants were issued August 17 in Oregon, and the men were taken into custody at the Boise airport after Chan traveled to meet Love. Both remain in federal custody in Idaho pending further proceedings.
