Street takeovers in Los Angeles County produced widespread damage over the weekend, with several events resulting in looted businesses and prompting a stronger response from local law enforcement.
A Superior Grocers location in South Los Angeles was among the affected sites, where shelves were emptied and goods left scattered. Similar incidents occurred in Gardena and Westmont, according to FOX 11 Los Angeles.
Commander Terrence Bell of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department stated that investigators are actively working to identify participants. He noted ongoing efforts to hold those responsible accountable through standard investigative channels.
The weekend events followed a targeted operation on August 29 that covered Compton, Carson, Lakewood, East Los Angeles and Lynwood. That sweep produced 19 citations, six arrests and four vehicles held for 30 days.
Bell indicated that spectators may also face penalties. Certain cities have enacted fines reaching $2,500 for individuals observed watching these events.
The department is incorporating automatic license plate readers and drones to monitor and respond to takeovers more effectively. Bell emphasized that early aerial observation provides an advantage in planning responses.
Additional proposals under consideration include the destruction of seized vehicles involved in takeovers, with some potentially featured in public demonstrations. Organizers who promote events online could face criminal charges, and Bell warned that participants will eventually be identified.
