The Los Angeles Police Department has released video recordings of two officer-involved deaths, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.
One recording depicts events inside a San Fernando Valley detention facility involving 58-year-old Jose Carlos Hoyos-Munoz. Officers entered his cell after he displayed erratic behavior, applied restraints, and placed a covering over his head following an attempt to spit at them.
The footage shows Hoyos-Munoz receiving further strikes while already secured. He was later found unresponsive and declared dead at the location. Authorities had arrested him two days earlier on allegations that he had injured his mother and another relative with a knife.
A separate recording covers an encounter on Normandie Avenue under a freeway overpass on July 29 with 33-year-old Alejandro Luis Garcia. Officers responded to reports that he had damaged several vehicles and tried to hit pedestrians with a baseball bat.
In the video Garcia moves toward the officers while holding the bat and does not follow repeated orders to release it. After being shot he falls to the ground, officers then perform resuscitation until he is taken to a hospital where he is pronounced dead.
