San Fernando police officers shot and killed a man late Monday night who authorities say was assaulting a woman with a shovel.

The response came after a report of an assault with a deadly weapon near the intersection of Third Street and Maclay Avenue shortly before midnight.

Upon reaching the location, officers encountered the individual holding the shovel and discharged their firearms, killing him. Interim Chief Anthony Miranda said that "the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation."

It remains unclear whether the woman suffered injuries, and the man has not been publicly identified, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.
