A powerful swell originating from Hurricane Marie is producing dangerous ocean conditions along Southern California beaches during the Labor Day weekend. The hurricane itself is expected to stay several hundred miles offshore, yet its effects will reach local shorelines and nearby counties.
The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory and a coastal flood advisory covering Saturday through Tuesday. These alerts cover large breaking waves and strong rip currents, as well as minor to moderate flooding that is most likely during evening high tides.
Exposed south-facing beaches are forecast to see waves of five to eight feet, with even larger sets possible near Malibu. Peak tides above seven feet early next week will heighten the chance of flooding in low-lying areas such as Avalon, Malibu, and the Alamitos Peninsula in Long Beach.
Tropical moisture associated with the system will raise humidity levels across the region. County health officials have also posted warnings about elevated bacteria counts at nine coastal locations, including sites near Santa Monica Pier, Redondo Beach Pier, and Inner Cabrillo Beach.
While forecasters express high confidence in the swell impacts, the precise path of any light rain remains uncertain. The greatest chance for showers exists on Sunday, mainly south and east of Los Angeles toward San Diego, with unsettled conditions possibly continuing into early next week.
Local emergency management and public works teams will monitor shoreline conditions and runoff risks throughout the weekend. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health will maintain ongoing water-quality testing at affected sites.
Beach visitors are advised to stay close to lifeguard towers and avoid swimming where bacteria warnings are posted.
