A routine volleyball session at Compton Early College High School became a notable event when professional player and two-time Olympic medalist Haleigh Washington arrived unannounced. The visit formed part of the launch of Saving Our Daughters' Behind the Scenes in Careers program on Sept. 2, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.
Washington, who competes for LOVB Los Angeles, took part in drills with the team and discussed her career path at the highest levels of the sport. Students had not been informed in advance that she would attend.
The nonprofit, co-founded by Keke Palmer, focuses on removing social obstacles for young people in communities such as Compton. Its new volleyball programming for high school girls this year is run in partnership with Compton Unified School District and the school itself.
"I believe in leaving the game better than you found it, and this is a great way to show the next generation what they can be and who they can be," Washington said during the session.
Coach Kimberly Ponce noted the value of representation, stating that it is important for students to see individuals who look like them in respected roles. Athlete Joseph Rodriguez said the visit reinforced his commitment to continue playing volleyball.
Another student, Alexa Valdovinos, observed that the encounter shifted her view of volleyball as a possible career alongside her academic plans. The session allowed participants to examine both on-court and off-court opportunities connected to the sport.
Saving Our Daughters' Cinderellas Curriculum supports career development and mentorship, and the Behind the Scenes in Careers effort extends that work into professional fields including sports. The event provided direct exposure to pathways from high school athletics to professional levels.
