A photography club has formed to document the residents, vibrancy and traditions of southeast Los Angeles through organized walking sessions.

David Hernandez and Alan Arvizu established SELA Photo Walk a few months ago to present the area, known as SELA, in a constructive way.

The cities covered include Huntington Park, Bell, Cudahy, Maywood, Lynwood and Vernon. Participants gather once a month in a different location and photograph along a set path.

Hernandez said the goal includes inviting residents from within SELA and visitors from elsewhere to explore the communities. Arvizu noted that the photographers often resemble tourists or paparazzi, which helps generate the desired positive notice for the neighborhoods.

Diana Morales of the SELA Arts Foundation stated that the effort centers on communities frequently excluded from discussions and that have been underserved. Walks have included a historian and a poet, with the next session set for Sunday, Sept. 27. Details appear on the group's Instagram account.
