A Los Angeles police officer was injured Friday night when a vehicle hit him during a hit-and-run on Foothill Boulevard in Sylmar, according to ABC7 Los Angeles. He had been examining a separate multi-vehicle crash when the incident occurred around 7:45 p.m.
The officer was taken to Providence Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills, where he is being treated for a broken leg and head injuries. Officials described his condition as stable on Saturday.
The driver fled the scene after striking the officer. Investigators later found an abandoned vehicle near the Pacoima Wash and traced the suspected driver to a residence on Sutter Avenue in Pacoima.
Police detained one individual at the Pacoima home. The person, who had blood on his head, was placed in custody and transported for medical care after showing signs of a possible brain injury.
Witness Erik Vanlier described the response at the scene, stating, "This is beyond crazy, there is a massive response because it's someone with a badge, who was struck." He also noted the suspect's condition during transport, saying the individual required an upgrade from basic to advanced life support.
The detained man's wife told reporters that her husband was traveling to a viewing for his mother, who had recently died of cancer, when the events unfolded.
