Los Angeles and Southern California residents can choose from a range of music, film and cultural activities during the Labor Day weekend period, according to LAist. The recommendations cover events in Hollywood, Venice, Newport Beach and other locations between Sept. 3 and Sept. 8.

Music fans have several options. Charlatans UK will perform with the Dandy Warhols and Mercury Rev at the Santa Ana Observatory on Thursday and at the Hollywood Palladium on Friday. On Thursday evening, Serj Tankian of System of a Down headlines an Armenian heritage concert at the Greek Theatre in Los Feliz.

Film screenings feature prominently on the schedule. A complete Lord of the Rings trilogy will be shown on 35mm prints at the Los Angeles Theatre on Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m. with intermissions between each film. Earlier on Saturday, the Shitty Movie Club will screen Megalopolis at Club Fais Do Do in West Adams.

Other weekend activities include the Rebel Jazz Fest at Windward Plaza in Venice on Saturday, featuring live music, DJs and roller skating. A Dolly Parton tribute skate night is set for Sunday evening at Moonlight Rollerway in Glendale. Family-oriented programming with live music, movies and water sports runs through Monday at Newport Dunes in Newport Beach.

Additional events include a full-contact armored combat tournament at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in East Hollywood on Friday and a live musical theater parody of Buffy the Vampire Slayer at Three Clubs in Hollywood on Tuesday. A nonpartisan mayoral forum focused on environmental justice and climate issues will take place on Thursday at L.A. Trade Technical College.

LAist notes that the fall calendar is filling with new museum openings, theater productions and sports contests, including Dodgers games approaching the playoffs. The listed activities provide immediate options for the holiday weekend.
