State Sen. Tony Strickland of the 36th District proposed a resolution to mark California Wildlife Day in memory of a bald eagle named Jackie. The measure received unanimous bipartisan approval in the legislature last week.
Strickland said the designation provides a fitting way to include Jackie in the state’s official record. He noted that public reaction to the idea exceeded expectations and reflected widespread interest in the eagle’s story.
Jackie gained attention through a YouTube livestream operated by the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley for more than ten years. The bird had been rescued in Big Bear and received treatment for severe anemia at the Ojai Raptor Center before dying on Aug. 10.
According to LAist, the resolution encourages Californians to remember Jackie and to support efforts that protect wildlife for future generations. Strickland described the eagle as a symbol of qualities that unite people across differing views.
Friends of Big Bear Valley and partner groups plan a public event on Oct. 3 to mark the occasion. Specific details on the location remain to be announced.
