Firefighters responded to a brush fire that began in San Juan Capistrano near Ortega Highway and Gibby Road around 2 p.m.
The fire, called the Gibby Fire, expanded quickly from an initial size of three acres to 150 acres and then briefly to 450 acres before officials adjusted the total to 216 acres.
The Orange County Fire Authority reported a moderate to rapid rate of spread and brought in additional ground crews along with aircraft to contain the flames.
A shelter-in-place order was issued for Orange County zone ORT01 along the border with Riverside County, and eastbound and westbound lanes of Ortega Highway were closed at separate points in Rancho Mission Viejo and Lake Elsinore. No evacuation warnings or orders were active for nearby residents, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.
